Easy Steps to Save & Store Ginger

· Local Food,Real Food,Recipes,Blog

Ginger is a favorite REAL FOOD ingredient in my kitchen! While it’s wonderful have fresh ginger on hand, I try to always keep a stash of frozen minced ginger in my freezer. I love this easy technique to save & store it for adding to tea, broth, soups and stews or other recipes.

Here are my Easy Steps to Save & Store Ginger:

1. Be sure to purchase ORGANIC ginger. And buy local in-season, if you can! I’m fortunate to have Windcrest Farm, a certified organic farm, nearby and I really appreciate the opportunity to stock up on their fresh ginger and turmeric each year.

2. Remove the outer skin using the edge of a spoon or a vegetable peeler if the ginger is more woody. Then CUT it into smaller manageable pieces.

3. Place the ginger pieces in your food processor and pulse until finely MINCED.

4. SCOOP the minced ginger into ice cube trays and add a little filtered water, if needed. This silicon ice tray/baking mold is handy because each indentation holds exactly one tablespoon. Conventional ice cube trays hold 2 tablespoons.

5. Place the tray in your FREEZER for several hours then transfer to a freezer-safe container for long-term storage. The frozen cubes should keep for up to 3 months … but I always use them up more quickly than that!

Now you will have conveniently portioned minced ginger to make a cup of healthy hot tea, to simmer in a mug-full of nourishing bone broth, or add to soups and stews. You could also toss one of these ginger cubes into my Easy Butternut Squash Soup!
